The problem

Non-strategic raw-material procurement was costing a biopharmaceutical company twice over: overpaying on orders from poor contract and ordering practices, and sitting on surplus stock that racked up holding costs and expiration risk.

The system

I built a demand-forecasting model to predict required raw-material quantities, then used it to calculate reorder points and Economic Order Quantities — prioritizing existing stock, especially short-shelf-life materials, before triggering new purchase orders. Purchase cost, quantity and supplier activity are tracked in a Power BI dashboard.

The hard part

The transaction data was heavily skewed — a handful of extreme-value orders could have distorted the reorder-point math, so outliers had to be handled deliberately rather than smoothed over.

Result

A live procurement dashboard and a reorder model targeting a 25%+ cut in excess-stock holding costs and a 20%+ reduction in underutilized inventory.
